Why Sicily? Imagine a piece of Mediterranean paradise, unspoiled by mass tourism, and then visit it after all the beach-goers have left for the year. Hi, my name is Cat, and I'm addicted to Sicily. From the moment I first saw her from above from an airplane, I've been in love. It's like Italy, Greece, North Africa, and someplace unknown and utterly magical had a baby and that baby's name was Sicilia. Never was there ever a place like her - she'll break your heart, captivate you, frustrate you, nourish you, and you'll never be the same...or at least nobody I've ever met has.

Many people associate Sicily with the heart of the Italian mob and ooey-gooey tomato and cheese based cuisine - a reputation that comes more from the Sicilian-American culture than what this extraordinary island truly is. Magna Grecia, or "Great Greece" during the ancient Greek era and Trinacrium to the ancient Romans, Sicily has some of the most beautiful and well preserved ancients ruins in the world, that the mob has been kind enough not to touch. And the food, oh the food, could not be further from it's "reputation" if it tried - the cuisine is bright, simple, and very flavorful. Sicily is big, way bigger than I ever imagined, and has a population of over 5 million people, so it would be near impossible to see it all without a number of weeks to explore, take it from me - I spent week after week exploring last year only to feel like I barely scratched the surface. So on this trip you will be experiencing just the most delicious portion of what she has to offer: from crystal clear turquoise waters all the way to the black slopes of Mount Etna, from wineries in the countryside to the metropolises of Palermo and Catania, from the rich green fields and vineyards to the stark arid south, and from beach front to city center. Please come join us for a truly epic trip, space is limited.

Week One - September 1-7, 2018

Accommodation in a 9 Bedroom, 10 Bathroom restored farmhouse outside of Scopello in Northwestern Sicily

This will be my second trip to Villa il Baglio, it's magic, epic, unique, and hard to really describe. Set on a plateau gently sloping down to the sea and surrounded by 4 hectares of olive trees and local, native vegatation, Villa Il Baglio is the ideal place for a group that wants a little bit of everything. It is an old fortified farm (Baglio in Sicilian), whose recent restoration has maintained the considerable character of the place. The view is so breathtaking that it'll get you up to watch the sunrise even if you aren't a morning person. There are 4 access points to the sea and our own beaches that are completely private, yes, private! The rocky shoreline is filled with lovely pools for sitting in and is also equipped with wooden decks for practicing yoga and laying in the sun. The house has its own kitchen garden, where we can collect vegetables and herbs to cook with. Located just 1 km from the charming seaside town of Scopello and 3 km from the Nature reserve, Villa il Baglio could not be better located. 3 nights accommodation in an agriturismo outside of Modica in Southern Sicily

Situated near Modica, this working farm offers 5 rooms all with en suite bathroom, air-conditioning, garden views, flat screen TV with satellite, and WiFi. The whole property has just been redone and we will be among the first guests to visit. The entire property will be at our disposal for the duration of our stay, including a lounge, a restaurant where we will be dining for a few of our meals prepared from products produced on the farm, and many patios and outdoor spaces. This part of Southern Sicily will be our home base to visit some incredible places, from the Baroque gems of Ragusa and Modica to Syracuse - what was one the most important city of the ancient world.

3 nights accommodation in an architectural design B&B in the center of Catania

Our bed & breakfast is in the historic center of Catania – just a few steps from the Bellini Opera Theatre. It was once a factory built at the end of the 19th century, dedicated to the cultivation and processing of blue fish (I promise it no longer smells), the building is located next to the medieval city walls and the old bastion of San Giuliano. The concept of the space was to seek the conversion of urban spaces typical of the Mediterranean and of the ancient courts of Arabic origin into modern, functional spaces. This is accomplished through a process of wise architectural restoration and always keeping alive the historical memory of each and every structure. The renewed facilities are thus placed within their cultural and historical context of belonging. It is a place where history, architecture and design combine cleverly with a new concept of hospitality which is original and contemporary. From here we will explore Catania, Mount Etna, and Taormina.
